Woodsafe® WFX™ – Fire protection for naturally weathered wood façades

Woodsafe® WFX™ is specifically developed for timber products exposed to outdoor weathering, where fire performance must remain documented even after long-term exposure. The product makes it possible to combine the natural weathering of wood with documented, long-term fire performance, giving architects, specifiers, and contractors the freedom to create sustainable timber façades without compromising safety.

WFX™ is suitable for a wide range of timber species, including cedar, cedar shingles, cypress, ThermoWood® (spruce, pine, and ash), Accoya®, ayous, fraké, larch, oak, spruce, and Nobelwood®. The product is used in projects with demanding requirements for aesthetics, durability, and documented fire performance, including buildings classified as Br1.

 

Verified for exterior use

Woodsafe® WFX™ is supported by comprehensive testing, certification, and continuous third-party supervision, including:

  • Swedish Type Approval TG 0263-08
  • CE certification in accordance with CPR 305/2011
  • Continuous Factory Production Control (FPC) supervised by RISE (Notified Body 0402)
  • Verified use class EXT according to EN 16755
  • Tested in accordance with ASTM D2898

Use class EXT according to EN 16755 means that the durability of the fire performance has been verified following standardized accelerated weathering for exterior service conditions. WFX™ is specifically developed for timber façades intended to weather naturally outdoors, where the documented fire performance is provided by the industrial fire-retardant treatment itself—not by a protective surface coating to maintain the durability of the fire protection. The product shall always be used in accordance with the applicable documentation, certificates, and system guidelines.

In our impregnation process, the wood and the wood product are wetted in their entirety, and depending on the product, 2-15% by weight of fire retardant is pressed deep into the cell structure of the wood, where it is fixed.

The combination of moisture and drying means that an initially finished planed, sawn or processed wood product can become slightly crooked and warped compared to untreated wood. The better the quality of the wood product, the better the final product.

In the fire impregnation process, the wood is soaked with water mixed with fire impregnation agent, and then dried. The impregnation process also means that dimensional changes depending on the type of wood and plywood can occur, even within the framework of the same quality grading, which can result in the wood material's dimensions changing differently.

Dimensional change may deviate from planing tolerance and plywood tolerance, which is considered ok because the impregnation process takes place after planing and the production of plywood. It is the responsibility of the client/customer to take these conditions into account when ordering Woodsafe's contractor impregnation services through partners.
