The documentation is part of the contract

The right documentation is just as important as the right materials—and essential for a smooth project.

As a construction project approaches the technical consultation, inspection, and final approval stages, the documentation becomes just as important a part of the contract as the actual construction work. Even if a wood facade or wood structure is properly installed, the contractor must be able to demonstrate that the materials used meet the project’s requirements and that the documentation corresponds to the specific shipment that was installed.

For fire-retardant wood, this is not just a matter of CE marking. The documentation may also include declarations of performance (DoP), classification reports, type approvals, Field of Application (FoA), use class according to EN 16755, and documentation from full-scale facade tests. Together, these documents demonstrate that the material has been tested, classified, and is intended for the specific construction in question.

For the contractor, this provides peace of mind. When the correct documentation is available even before installation begins, communication with the supervisor, inspector, and client becomes significantly easier. This reduces the risk of additional work, production interruptions, and time-consuming investigations later in the project.

What does the contractor need to check?

A structured inspection before installation saves time, money, and unnecessary discussions.

It is rare for the contractor to be the one to assess whether a product meets a specific fire safety requirement, but the contractor is responsible for ensuring that the correct materials are used and that the documentation on which the project is based is actually included with the delivery.

A simple routine before installation begins can therefore make a big difference.
Be sure to check, among other things, that:

  • The delivery conforms to the project documents
  • The correct fire class and use class are specified in the documentation
  • The FoA covers the current design
  • The documentation comes from an accredited or registered body
  • The material is labeled so that it can be linked to the correct certificate and batch

If anything is out of spec, the issue should be addressed before the material is installed. It is much easier to resolve any uncertainties upon delivery than after the facade has already been installed on the building.

When the project changes

Changes in materials and modifications are common—but they need to be handled properly.

Virtually no construction project is carried out exactly according to the original design. Delivery times change, products are discontinued, design details are adjusted, and materials may need to be replaced with equivalent alternatives.

It is often entirely possible to make such changes, but they must always be verified against the project documentation. A different type of wood, a new panel profile, or a modified design may mean that the documented fire class no longer applies.
